A Simple Care Routine for Wooden Spoons and Spatulas

Wood and bamboo utensils do not need a complicated routine. They do need consistency. A few small habits help the surface stay clean, dry, and comfortable for everyday cooking.

Wash tools by hand with warm water and mild dish soap. Avoid long soaking because standing water can stress natural fibers over time. If food is stuck on the surface, soften it with a brief rinse, then use a sponge or dish brush instead of a sharp scraper.

Dry each piece right after washing. A towel removes surface moisture, and a few minutes of open-air drying helps the tool finish drying before it goes back into a drawer. Storing tools while damp is one of the easiest habits to fix.

Keep wood and bamboo away from extreme heat when possible. Do not leave a spoon resting against a hot pan edge for long stretches, and avoid placing tools directly on a burner or heating element. Everyday cooking heat is different from direct heat exposure.

Check the surface from time to time. If a tool feels rough, clean it, let it dry fully, and decide whether it still feels comfortable to use. If a piece develops deep cracks, persistent odor, or areas that are hard to clean, retire it from food prep.

Simple care is mostly about rhythm: wash, dry, air, store. That rhythm keeps your tools easy to reach and ready for the next meal.
